linkedin-largeI may just be feeling a bit grumpy but I really am bothered by the LinkedIn invites I’ve been receiving lately. I’m bothered enough to take time out to write this article.

I’ve over 1000+ connections on LinkedIn. Mostly people I’ve met whilst networking. Others are people I’ve come to know really well whilst others I don’t know at all. I tend to accept most invitations provided they look “normal”.

I accept “alien” invitations because I’ve been contacted by people who have become clients before, so I monitor that inbox regularly.

Lately though, I’m receiving a lot of LinkedIn invites that go like this…

“Since you are a person I know and trust, I wanted to invite you to join my network on LinkedIn.”

This invite is not system generated so why are people writing this to complete strangers. Why do they think it’s appropriate to write this to a new business connection?

Is this what you say to people you meet for the first time at events, parties or the office?

I don’t know these people and I suspect they don’t know me – they may have been reading my articles or seen me featured in an article but if that’s the case why not begin the connection by mentioning how you came across my profile and why you think you should be in my network? Isn’t that what you do when you introduce yourself to people. Find a point of connection?

Simply writing …

“Since you are a person I trust, I wanted to invite you to join my network on LinkedIn”

will get you ignored or even deleted.

Take a minute to read the profile of the person you are trying to connect to and say something relevant.

I think its time for us to learn to be human and ourselves online as well as offline. Its time for us to be real online. It’s all about making meaningful authentic connections.

LinkedIn default invitation text  “I’d like to add you to my professional network.”

Is just as irritating but I know it can be triggered automatically on error. I’m more forgiving when I receive it especially when a personalised note or email follows to explain that.
